Vredenburg Saldanha Cricket Club
HISTORY
The town was established in 1740 to deal with the grain from the surrounding farms but the names given to the town in its first years (Twisfontein and Prosesfontein) refer to the bitter battles over water rights in this dry area. When the church was built in 1875, the town was renamed Vredenburg – town of peace.
It is not known what year cricket was first played in the town but for many years the local club played on the rugby fields and the club was entered in the West Coast league, Boland’s third league. According to the locals, the town council was very co-operative when they wanted to move to their own headquarters, levelling the ground and planting grass on open ground. In 1978 this land was on the edge of Vredenburg. The clubhouse, which also has squash courts, was built in the 1979-1980 season.
The towns of Saldanha and Vredenburg were joined by government order in 1975 but it was not until the Vredenburg cricket club wanted Premier status that the cricket clubs were amalgamated. The new club was granted Premier status in 1990. The club has done consistingly well, achieving a second place in 1994 and contesting in two one-day finals.
A few Boland players have represented the club including : Kenny Jackson, Dewald van Wyk and Neil Carter, while the likes of Ashley Giles, Graham Charlesworth and Dougie Brown have added an international flavour.
The 2nd team won the 20/20 competition in the 2007/2008 season.
Andre Huisamen (2006/2007) and Quinton Kannemeyer (2007/2008) represented the SA Country team. Quinton Kannemeyer (2008/2009) represented the Boland Amateur team. Shane Summers represented Free State in 2003-2004 season.
The club runs a successful youth development program since 2006 under Louis Hartzenberg III and caters for u/11, u/13, u/15, girls u/16-19 and boys u/19.
The club fields three teams of which the third team plays in the West Coast league. The 2008/2009 was an outstanding season for the club. Both the 1st and 2nd team played in the semi-finals of both the 20/20 and the 45 limited overs competitions of the Boland’s Premier and Reserve Premier league. The 3rd team ended third in their respective league. Mario Prins, an ex-Cavalier heads now the coaching department.
