Malmesbury Cricket Club

HISTORY

The Malmesbury Cricket Club is situated in the heart of the Swartland.

The facilities at the club include two turf nets, two cement nets, as well as one cricket oval.

The Club currently has two senior men’s teams that compete in the Boland Cricket Union league.

After a match on 25 October 1986 players from the original Malmesbury Cricket Club discussed the quality of cricket in Malmesbury. During this discussion the unanimous feeling surfaced, that something had to be done about this.

Players from Malmesbury Cricket Club and Arcadia Cricket Club reached out to each other and came to the conclusion that some of the Arcadia Cricket Club players, who at this stage played in the Boland Second League, also wanted to improve their cricket.

Players from both clubs realised that the only way to improve their cricket would be for the two teams to amalgamate. After numerous meetings and discussions the two teams decided to merge.

In August 1987, one of the most important decisions in the history of the Malmesbury Cricket Club was made when members of both clubs agreed and approved the amalgamation of the two clubs.

The amalgamation of Malmesbury Cricket Club and Arcadia Cricket Club was one of the first where a "white" and a "coloured" club joined forces.

An agreement was reached by members of both clubs that the name of the amalgamated club would be Malmesbury Cricket Club.

Another positive development from the amalgamation of the two clubs was the opportunity that was created for learners in the "coloured" schools, where cricket was non-existent, to practise and play cricket under the banner of Malmesbury Cricket Club. They participated in the Boland High School league.
