Trevor Davy

Nickname: TC

Born: 13 June 1962, Paarl, South Africa

Umpiring debut: 2000

Favorite thing about being an umpire:

Having the best seat in the house to watch the game, also listening to the clever chirping and watching players trying to “out think” and out play each other

Least favorite thing about being an umpire:

Players trying to spoil the game by just being rude or unreasonable, captains not knowing the laws and arguing about it, sledging aimed to humiliate a player and racist remarks on the field

Form(s) of the Game umpired:

  • Clubs: Boland country and premier leagues
  • National Weeks: U13 Standard Bank Week (Durban), U19B Khaya Majola Week (Pretoria), U19A Khaya Majola Week (Durban), SASSU Week (Johannesburg) and SASSU Week (Pretoria)
  • Provincial: SA Women’s League, SA Country Districts League and English Country Warm-Ups
  • Schools: Local Derby’s and Pro 20 schools competitions
  • Western Cape Academy Games

Background Information:

Trevor played cricket for Young People’s Cricket Club and Paulus Joubert High School. He started umpiring in 2000/2001 season after ending his playing career at Young People’s Cricket Club. He officiated in his first national tournament in Durban during the 2001/2 season after doing 50 games in the Boland club leagues. He moved through the ranks quickly and participated in the U19B Khaya Majola Week in Pretoria during the 2002/3 season. He also went to Johannesburg in the 2003/4 season for the U19A Week. He umpired at the SASSU week both in 2004/5 (Pretoria) and in 2006/7 (Johannesburg). In 2005/6 he could not go to any tournaments due to work related problems and he got out of the national system. This is his only regret with regards to his career, as he feels that he will never know whether he was good enough for the top level. However, he feels that he was fortunate to travel all over South Africa, seeing places and being on the same field with some of the best players in the country. He feels that here he gained valuable experience, which helped him in the very tough club competitions in the Boland

Career Highlights:

  • Achieved 98% in my national exam in 2001
  • Best Umpire Country League – 2002/3 Season
  • Best Umpire Premier League – 2004/5 Season
  • Best Umpire Premier League – 2006/7 Season
  • Best Umpire Western Cape Academy – 2003/4 Season
  • Officiating in the SA Women’s Final, Boland vs. Western Province – 2006/7 Season

Personal quotes:

  • Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events, small minds discuss people

Advice for aspiring umpires:

  • Never try to be the boss on the field. Listen and learn, but stay in control. Never let your emotions get the better of you. The only place to think about a possible wrong decision is at home, never on the field or after the game. Do not discuss or defend decisions to players, you don’t owe them anything. You owe yourself and enjoyable game and career. Golden Rule: “If in doubt, it’s not out”. If you don’t enjoy the game and the long hours, rather get out and be a spectator
