Mervyn started out as a rugby referee in the Western Province leagues where he was forced to quit after a knee injury. Although he was a really good rugby ref he feels that it was a blessing in disguise because shortly after this he was introduced to the game of cricket and accepted it with both hands. Mervyn started to learn the game on the field of play and most importantly, from his fellow colleagues. He always looks forward to his next game but never forgets his games in the past because this is where he learns from his mistakes. Mervyn currently works as an Operations Manager for TNT Internal Mail (an international postal organization). He is married to Ursula and they have two children, Lester and Shannon. Mervyn would like to further his career as a cricket umpire and his wife and kids support him in this regard. His boss is also very understanding when it comes to taking time off for cricket umpiring – a fact that he appreciates very much. For the past 17 years he has lived in Wellington (Newton)
