Coronation Cricket Club

HISTORY

Coronation Cricket Club was established after World War II in 1946 at Lanquedoc (Groot Drakenstein Valley) by Mr. Jossie Jason. Initially, cricket was played on a cement wicket.

On establishing the Coronation Club it originally joined the Stellenbosch Cricket Union. In 1950 the club, however, moved to Paarl Cricket Union. Coronation Cricket Club excelled in the Paarl competition during the 1951/2 season and won the league during the 1955/6 season.

In 1960, as a result of an influx of new members, the management of the club decided to rejoin the Stellenbosch Cricket Union. Droëe Baan Sports Ground was now the official home ground.

The Rhodes Fruit Farms Rugby Oval became the home cricket ground in 1964.

During the 1964/5 season Coronation Cricket Club won the league in the Stellenbosch competition, but during the 1969 season the club rejoined Paarl Cricket Union.

The Eighties, after the near closure of the Coronation Cricket Club during 1979, introduced a new era of players under the guidance of Pieter Williams and rejoined the Stellenbosch Cricket Union.

Previous Coronation Cricket club teams have enjoyed mixed successes with the A-teams securing the Knock-Out trophy twice and the League trophy twice over a ten year period. The highlight, however, was when our A-team won the League and Champion of Champion trophies a year prior to the unification of cricket in South Africa.

During these years a young boy, Henry Williams, who was playing in the senior side, made inroads and created fear amongst the batsmen in the Stellenbosch League. He is now a SA player and a coach at the club.

During the 1991/2 season Coronation Cricket Club decided on the following:

1. There would be no amalgamation with other clubs;

2. Cricket would be played under the banner of the Boland Cricket Board; and

3. Coronation Cricket Club would enroll in their top league, the Premier League.

The Coronation Cricket Club Women’s side made history by being crowned champions in the Boland Women’s League for three consecutive years. The club has also produced a South African Women’s Player, Alicia Smith.
