BOLAND VS SOUTH WESTERN DISTRICTS – DAY TWO
Derick Williams
The second day of the game between Boland and SWD saw the overnight batsmen Strydom on 14 and Stuurman on 5 taking to the field to continue with their team score on 44 / 4. Both men went on to score impressive half centuries with Strydom 68 and Stuurman 62.
These two kept the Boland bowlers at bay but once they were removed madness ensued. Slow left-arm orthodox man Cloete came to the fore and removed all forms of late resistance. This young man’s previous best was 2 / 38 but he well and truly ripped into the lower order of SWD. In the process he clean bowled three batsmen baffling them with guile and skill. Stuurman was the not out man with 62. The entire team back in the hut for 170. Best bowler on the Boland side was the aforementioned Cloete with an analysis of 10.5 / 2 / 23 / 4.
Boland took the field with a good lead and although Kriek left early on the rest of the men extinguished all hopes on the SWD side of a collapse. Leading the charge was Captain Ramela with 104. In a defining partnership of 150 with Birkenstock (80) they truly disheartened the SWD bowlers. With the score on 237 / 4 Boland made a sporting declaration. Ramela would be happy to have scored his maiden first class 100 and the truth of the matter is that the classy, stylish left hander that he is meant that a century was always around the corner.
This meant that once again the SWD side had to challenge the late hours of the day. The requirement for SWD was 377. This time was different though and South Western District boys stood firm to the challenge.
