BOLAND VS SOUTH WESTERN DISTRICTS – DAY THREE
Derick Williams
And so it came to pass that the game between Boland and South Western Districts ended in a draw. Being set the target of 377 to win or having Boland take ten wickets in the end neither happened but there must have been flutters either way.
South Western Districts will feel that with the solid 116 from Bredenkamp they were always in with a shot and indeed they were. When the match came to a close the SWD gents already passed the 300 mark. Boland however will feel that after the dismissal of Bredenkamp the resistance would have crumbled but in walked two determined men who must have realized that apart from saving the match they were still in with a shot. The two H’s, Hantam and Hugo came out when Boland was in the ascendency. Cloete the bowling hero from the first innings after Bothma send some men into casualties with heart conditions took 3 wickets. Hantam and Hugo though stuck to their guns with respective scores of 39 and 13 not out and for all practical purpose rained on the Boland parade. Cloete was best bowler on the Boland side with his analysis of 34 / 11 / 71 / 3.
In the end it was “A Bridge too far … ” the 1977 Richard Attenborough classic war epic that was based on a novel by Cornelius Ryan about the allied forces charged with destroying a succession of bridges in German occupied Europe to break the German lines. Boland may feel slightly aggrieved after being in a much more dominating situation than previous games and falling four wickets short of what would have been a deserved victory.
