Derick Williams
The Mbekweni Cricket School send their first team of under thirteen boys to Worcester for the national rural week. This is the first time for the Mbekweni Team on tour and also the first time they are participating in a tournament of this nature.
These boys are all a direct result of the cricket school of Merwe Genis and the team is coached by Ryan Hill and his assistant Vuyo Mangaliso. Another gentleman who brings a wealth of experience and a keen cricket mind to the equation is the manager Cedric Williams. Speaking to captain Luthor Mtandeki opening bowler and top order batsman he had the following to say; “I am ready and I am not nervous. I am looking forward to everything …” Fellows to look out for during the tournament are left handed batsman Sinethamba Jacobs, opening fast bowler Sanele Ndike and left hand spinner bowler Lebo Xabanisa also middle order batsman.
Jacques Kallis is the hero of the captain. Assistant coach looks up to A B De Villiers. He was an alrounder for your school and also the first team captain for Mbekweni Cricket Club. He started off with Merwe Genis as a schoolboy. Cedric Williams has been involved in cricket for 14 years. He just recently graduated as level two coach. This is an international coaching qualification which he completed with Boland Cricket. He is also the captain of Wellington where is an allrounder. He smiles when he mentions that he is a touch over medium pace.
The Tournament is to start on Sunday with the first game being time cricket which is also a new experience for the boys. The boys play for various schools in and around Mbekweni Township. Some of the boys are playing for Wellington Prep and Wellington Primary and Mboniselo Primary in the township. Let us wish them all of the best as the leave for an experience of a lifetime.
